The Practical Horseman podcast features conversations with respected riders, industry leaders and horse care experts to inform and inspire listeners. Co-hosted by Practical Horseman editor Sandra Oliynyk and multimedia content assistant Julia Murphy. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week’s Practical Horseman Podcast, sponsored by Equinavia, is with hunter, equitation and jumper trainer and judge Archie Cox. He spoke with us in late April as he and his students prepare for upcoming shows. They are competing on both the West and East Coasts at The Oaks Capistrano Cup 1 & 2 and the Devon Horse Show.
To give you more background on Archie, he grew up competing along the East Coast as a junior rider. He earned numerous equitation ribbons, including at the USEF Hunter Seat Medal Final and ASPCA Maclay Finals. Archie went on to ride for the equestrian team at Drew University. He collected team and individual Intercollegiate Horse Show Association titles at the regional and national level.
After college, Archie moved to California in 1992 to work with top hunter/jumper trainer Karen Healey for several years. In December 2000, Archie opened his own business, Brookway Stables—named after his grandparents’ farm in Maine—at Middle Ranch in Lakeview Terrace, California. His students and horses in training have collected numerous champion titles at the country’s most prestigious shows.
In our discussion, Archie talks about what he enjoys about working with horses, one of his favorite training exercises and what he wants to see in the show ring as a judge.

She has been an equestrian for over 26 years and has experience in eventing and dressage. Kathleen owns a semi-retired, 22-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Remi, who she previously competed in eventing.
Kathleen graduated from Georgetown College in 2011 and began her career in 2012 as a communications specialist at the U.S. Equestrian Federation. Alana Harrison
Alana Harrison is the Digital Managing Editor for Practical Horseman and Dressage Today. She’s been riding and showing in hunters and jumpers for almost 35 years, many of which she shared with her beloved Thoroughbred gelding, Memphis, before he passed away in 2018. Despite her love for off-the-track Thoroughbreds, she’s currently leasing an adorable 18-hand Trakehner/Clydesdale cross named Alex, and trains with Rachel Rohweder at Native River Farms in Fairview, Texas.
While studying for her journalism degree at Texas A&M University, Alana also had the opportunity to expand her riding experience and education as a member and captain of the Texas A&M English Equestrian Team and through equine studies’ classes.
After graduating in 2002, she started her career in equestrian journalism at Horse & Rider magazine, where she learned the ropes of Western equestrian sports and served as Managing Editor until 2010. Following her time at Horse & Rider, Alana worked as an editor, writer and photographer for Western & English Today, as well as for the American Paint Horse Association’s publications Paint Horse Journal and Chrome magazine, and served as a freelance contributor for EQUUS, Practical Horseman and New Holland Publications. Alana then went on to expand her equine nutrition and health education at SmartPak, working with both their customer-care and marketing teams.
In 2024, she was excited to return to her equestrian-journalism roots by joining the Practical Horseman and Dressage Today teams. Alana is based in Dallas, Texas.
